I removed the water pump and also want to replace the gasket under the water pump. The housing that seems to have the upper shaft seals with the gasket underneath seems almost impossible to pry out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

keep prying and you buy a housing.
drive shaft needs to be removed BEFORE seal housing removal.
it is in the service manual.

OK Thanks for that. The shaft will not pull out. Do you have to take apart the gear case?

look at the parts break down if you do not have a service manual and see if it has a nut on the end of shaft that will need to be removed.
If it does I am sure you will need to remove that nut to pull the shaft.
Then I am sure the nut is not available until you open up the case.

But I have never opened up a unit like yours

Yes, I was told by a Yamaha tech that I should just put the housing back on if I don't want a major gear case repair and job. Especially if it has been in the salt. I guess that gasket is not of that much importance as to leaking and etc. Kind of funny design.
