    relay, solenoid, magnetic contactor.
    all the same.
they are simply devices that use a small amperage control to control a large amperage device.
do not get hung up on the jinglish.

I believe like Rod said a relay and magnetic contactor uses a electricity to control electricity

But a solenoid can use a small amount of electricity or pressure to control other larger things also like air or water flow/pressure or electricity

dude it is all the same.
kinda like a push pull amp on an amplidyne.
we can use 1 milliwatt to control 10,000 watts.
could you eliminate a trim relay or a starter solenoid?
          yep.
simply wire a switch capable of carrying the current at the helm and wire it with 4a wire.

or use 18ga wire and a relay, solinoid, magnetic contactor.

when that motor left the factory no one knows how far away the motor will be from the controls.

unlike ferds and chebby's mercruiser, volvo or Yamaha has no clue what the power plant will be powering nor where it will be mounted.
