tilt and trim question VZ150TLRD

I recently bought a 2005 150 Vmax HDPI and have a question about the tilt. The first time I went to use it, I picked the motor all the way up to remove the transom saver and the tilt solenoid just clicked when I went to press it to go down. I was able to lower the unit with the bleed screw. I get to launch and the motor went right on up, but I bled it once I got into the water. Once I got into the water and started the boat it worked fine up and down.

The boat has been sitting for 2 weeks and Sunday I went and pressed the tilt buttons and it only clicked to go up but down the pump worked going down.

I read on another forum that low battery voltage could be an issue, so I charged the battery and it seems to work both up and down now. Once I press the switch it does click first but does go up and down.

Is it true that the battery voltage has this much to do with operating the motor or does it mean my solenoid is about to fail?

I can hear a definite click of the relay as my T/T unit engages. F150 btw.

I had voltage issues with bad connections earlier in the year and it affected the operation of the T/T system. It pulls some amps...

If I were you, I would take the batteries and have them load tested just to make sure. That's usually the first step anyway.

I was planning to take the battery out and have it tested this weekend, that is something free and easy. I'll also check all of the connections on the solenoid as well. the battery connections look clean. I've heard the tilt motor does draw ALOT of amps.

Which solenoid are you referring to? Just curious...

the one inside of the sealed box next to the relay and fuse box.

all connections and cables/wires between the battery and the T&T can cause a voltage drop and result in problems even the negative/ground.
voltage drop testing while under a load will lead you to where it has a problem if it is not the battery itself

Terminology....what you call a solenoid is also called a relay. A relay is an electromechanical solenoid I do believe....

I have a an F150, it is a little different than yours. I am not so familiar with the z motors. Kind of threw me when you said solenoid...I hang out around here to learn....

I thought your problem was with the trim and tilt system?

As 99yam says, the complete wiring diagram can be found in the applicable service manual. Plus much more. If you are going to be working on your motor it will behoove you to have a copy.

Not to be a **** but I know the difference between a solenoid and a relay. The two relays are for the fuel injection and something other than tilt and trim. The solenoid on the left is for the tilt and trim. This motor does have a solenoid for the tilt and trim motor.

I have no idea if there is any sort of language police enforcing it,

but my understanding has always been that a relay is "just" a magnetic switch,

but a solenoid is - principally - performing a mechanical motion.

Such as locking/unlocking a door.

Now many starter motors have an associated solenoid - which - by that definition - principally moves the gear to engage the flywheel.
But also may function as a relay (switch).

Digital service manuals can be purchased online. Many listings to choose from if you google your model number. Yamaha website offers this pay for download, though it's twice the cost as other non-yam websites. Just be sure you download the correct LIT# that corresponds to your engine model.
