With the advances over time, I suspect if a marine manufactured wanted to
they could develop a Wankle OB and as RB posted, smaller, more HP, less parts etc...

never saw a wankel in a pacer.
a few VW inline 4 cyl's but never a wankel.
when I worked for contenital VW,Porsche, mazda and audi in mobvile AL many moons back I was assigned as an apprentice to the Porsche,Mazda team.
there were some seal issues with the rotary motors, they have since been mostly resolved with modern ceramic seals.
      google supercharged rotary.
it is amazing the HP they can get out of one.

From what I understand the Pacer was originally designed to run Wankel motors, but they could not/did not meet the EPA standards so they stuck inline 6 in instead.
there was way too much motor for the amount of space under the hood.

I would like to see them bring the Rotory back if they solved the issues with seals

are you sure your talking the Pacer(fish bowl on wheels) with the gremlin?
all I ever saw in the pacer was a transverse mounted inline 4 with a VW emblem cast in the block.

however with American motors one never knew.

but the Horse power avalible from such a light package is incredible.

once stripped of it's controls I could pick up and walk away with an RX7 motor.

had a guy at Atmore speedway racing an RX3 with a twin rotor setup.
he left the line at 11,000 RPM and shifted at 16,000 RPM.

was hilarious to watch but it turned very impressive 1/8th mile times.
