or perhaps I am misinterpreting it..

Either way, I don't grasp the criticality of the positioning...

Unknowingly, I just seated all 4 seals till they bottomed out
100 hours later and an oil change, all is well.

Perhaps Rodbolt can tell us where the peril lies

another informative video from Rodbolt's favorite site on replacing top seals on lower unit.

          Little long.

In the video above the guy pressed until they bottomed out. Not that it is correct. Just an observation.

if you look carefully at the driveshaft bearing housing you will see an oil passage, bottom out the seal and it gets closed off.
the propshaft carrier is almost the same way. bottom out the seal and it restricts oil flow in and out of the bearing.
don't push the prop seals in far enough and the fish line cutter portion of the prop thrust washer eats the seal.
it is just to easy to simply do it once and do it right.

                  Priceless info.
                  Thanks, Rodbolt.

                    back in the day,early 90's.
when I did my first v6 reseal job I very very carefully followed the service manual for disassembly and reassembly.
all went very well until I got to the reinstalling of the propshaft seals.

it said install seals to the previously recorded depth.

now the disassembly part said NOTHING about recording a depth prior to removing the seal.

lucky there was another motor on the lot that I could remove the prop and measure the seal depth.

Yamaha manuals have improved greatly since the 80's and 90's.
