When I look it up it says 6H0-85540-04-00 has been superseded by 6H0-85540-07-00 on some sites. Other sites it gives the 04-00 number. To your knowledge does it make any difference?

Hey, if anyone thinks they need a new CDI I am all for them.

Last time I tried to talk someone out of buying one before having fully tested all aspects of the motor I got accused of meddling in the thread.

Some (not me) would say that a fool and his money are soon parted. Some (not me) might say that experience is a dear and expensive teacher but for fools there is no other.

Anyone disagree with the 07-00 number?

you are way behind on your answers to his questions.
he asked if it mattered which CDI he got the 04-00 or the 07-00.

from what I understand If sites list it as superseded then if you order the 04-00 you should get the 07-00.
either one should work, but the newer one has some changes/improvement to it and we have no idea what that is.

Also I saw where you said you pushed pins thru the wires.
I remember saying not to poke holes in the insulation. Slide pins into the connector were the wires go in without hurting the insulation.

I have no idea what the voltage reading should be coming out of the CPS so I am no help with that.

but if you can get a reading when #2 sparks and compare to when it does not spark that may give some useful information.
most spec for other things have specs for loaded (hooked up)and unloaded( not hooked up )

I will check the voltage from the CPS tomorrow IF it is firing on Cylinder 2 tomorrow. Not sure what I would be looking for since it is a new CPS and I am getting voltage to the CDI when it is not firing.

I do realize you said not to poke holes in the insulation but I did it for 2 reasons.
                  1. I want to make certain there is no discontinuity between the CPS connector and the CDI.
                  2. I am leaning toward CDI replacement, which, in any case, makes no difference if there are holes in the wire or not.

I also considered that if by some chance the CDI checks out good, I can put liquid electrical tape on the holes.

OK I thought it was before the connector you probed the wire.

measuring when it is and when it is not sparking just proves there is not a change in the input

Agreed. Hopefully it is firing in the morning.

Order the -04-00 from a Yamaha US dealer and you will get the -07-00.

Now if someone has a used -04-00 that should also work.

Engine not hitting on Cylinder 2 this morning. Time to get off the pot. Ordered a new CDI. Should be here in a couple days. Will let everyone know how this $500 plus part worked out.

SUCCESS!!! Replaced the CDI, put the boat back in the water and it runs like a new engine. In addition to not firing on cylinder 2 some of the time, before replacing the CDI, the boat would hesitate when I gave it full throttle. Now, it jumps right up on a plane. Guess the CDI had been going bad for some time. Thanks to everyone that helped diagnose this problem. It wasn't the cheapest solution but it was the right one.

                            Thanks again.
