  • F225TXR Water in oil

    I have a friends 69JX1032002 F225, It is getting
    water in the oil pan. He had an overheat alarm
    last week, I replaced the impeller and it is not
    building psi like it should. changed oil and filter
    took it to the water, ran it for 15 minutes and
    oil was full of water again.

    My question is could we have an exaust plate
    gasket leaking water in the oil pan?
    I've done a leak down test and it showed 20%
    leak down on 5 of the six cylinders, #2 is at 2%.
    I didn't hear air leaking from exaust.
    I beleave the high leak down is from carbon
    build up, engine has 368 hrs on it and he has never
    ran ring free in it. Any suggestions would be great.

    the two most typical reasons are a cracked head from freezing or a warped oil pan/ex guide.

      The spark plugs are new and had no water on
      them after running 15 mins.
      I looked in the cylinder with a scope and no
      water. Thank's Rod.

        What would you do first? Pull the power head
        or the heads?

          From reading here, (no hands on experience with that engine), I believe it's a bit easier to pull the engine from the mid-section.

          Can you see much carbon inside the spark plug holes? That's still pretty low hours (even W/O RF) for that much leakage....

          With that 20% leak down, you'll probably be pulling the heads anyway.

            There is alot of carbon. It's got 189 hrs
            under 1500 rpms.

              Well, you know the heads are coming off for sure. Might as well start there...
              Hopefully it's just the valves not seating, not the rings...

              Filling the heads (upside down) with fluid to see if they'll hold liquid (say Seafoam) should help tell the story.

                Thank's, no matter what it's a major tear
                down. I use trans fluid, it will run
                thru any thing that will leak.

                  during leak down test you should be able to hear where the air is leaking into crankcase, intake, or exhaust. that should say what to look into on that. maybe carbon not letting valves close all of the way or rings

                  But you will still need to find the water leak

                    how much water intrusion are we talking about?
                    if it is a powerhead/cyl head leaking hook up the hose to the flush port and see.
                    if water enters the pan on the hose with the engine OFF then look at powerhead components.
                    if it does not then look at the oil pan.

                    the power head is on the water pressure side.
                    the oil pan not so much pressure as it is discharge water.

                    anyway you go its going to be an easter egg hunt.
                    but use a bit of logic.

                    has the motor ever been overheated?
                    overheats warp oil pans and ex guides.

                        When I dumped the oil I put 4 quarts of fresh oil in
                        with a quart of diesel fuel and ran it till warmed up,
                        drained it, changed filter and filled with oil. Took it
                        to the water, ran it for 15 mins and the oil was white.

                        Customer did have an over heat code, said he did not
                        run it after the alarm. Good advise Rod, I talked him into
                        taking to a dealer for I don't have the room. Working out
                        of my garage this time of year. I was a Yamaha/Mercury
                        tech/service manager for 22 years and got tired of all of
                        the bull sheet. I've never seen water in the oil this bad,
                        seen the making oil or the running to cold problems.
