I would recommend a Yamaha multi-function type. Which will be an updated version of what you have, as that is an older version. It has been replaced several times. It should be plug and play if you get was is referred to as a -83 type. For instance:
How old are the gauges? If they've aged then its a good chance your seeing the beginning stages of gauge failure. I recently replaced my tach gauge for the same reason...fading read-out, which then led to a blank screen, eventhough the backlight was still on and functioning alarms.

My gauge is also faded, but it still works, maybe one day I'll do it like in that post.
