  • tilt / trim motor brushes F225txrd

    So at 11 years old, 1600 operating hours, the t/t motor is failing;

I've got no complaints with that kind of service.

The armature shows some wear, but mostly its just the brushes are gone.

What is Yamaha thinking, with the price they've put on replacement brushes?

that's one brush, right? I need four....

Like the $110 check valve? Or $5 o-rings.

Basically $300 for brushes or $600 for motor. Hmmmm

Go down to your local auto electric shop and I bet you can get brushes for a couple of bucks.

That armature looks like toast IMO. Would need to be turned up on a lathe and then the separator sections undercut a bit, at best.

I agree, most starter repair places should have the equipment to clean that up.
find a set of brushes that will fit or are close.
          brushes are easy to modify/reshape.
some Hardware stores may have a box of assorted brushes

bet the rebuild shop could do the whole thing for you if everything tests out OK

Agree! But does not necessarily have to be auto, In my business as a Mechanical Contractor in Miami I frequently used the services of: Electric Motor Repair Estimates | Electric Motor Mechanics Miami

They do a/c, d/c frequency drives; anything from fractional horsepower to over 100HP. They are a small family owned company. I'm sure you can find a local shop near you that does the same.

Where are your neck of the woods?

60 bucks a few years ago to have my Mercury trim and tilt motor refurbished.

                  Thank you, Chuck!

in fact, that looks like what I just installed this afternoon
I ordered it last week from eBay for $130 (maybe the same seller)
when I first looked up the price for the Yamaha brushes!

We'll see how it holds up.

I may try to rebuild the original Yamaha motor.
As you guys have mentioned, brushes are do-able -
worst case I grind down larger ones to fit.

But Boscoe is right - that armature needs to be turned down -
and I don't have access to a lathe

What spanner wrench did you use?

I am sure there is a shop close to you that can do it

Shouldn't have needed one for simply pulling the electric T&T motor..

                        Just un-bolt the electrical motor.

Very pretty finish on the wrench,
although the pins had burrs that I had to grind off to make it fit.

Why did you need the spanner to pull the electric motor?

haha good question, Scott - did not need it for the motor, of course.

I replaced the motor because it was dying,

but "while I was at it" I replaced the herniated seal on the tilt ram -

I think pstephens saw that other thread...
