  • Service on F150 Been Sitting

I decided to pass on buying new, so I found a used F150 with 500hrs.
A reputable marine shop has had the motor in a crate for the past year since the boat owner repowered.
Shop owner has the computer read-out and compression test results.

If bought and after mounting on the boat, changing the impeller, putting fresh motor oil, lower lube oil and new spark plugs, what else should be done prior to starting?

Any questions I should ask and anything in particular I should be looking at?

What year F150? Wonder if VST was drained prior to storage?

      Plus 1 ^^^.

I'd have then change the VST filter and any other fuel filters that are a PIA to get to. Especially while its off the boat, sitting there in the A/C.

A leak down test would be better to check the overall health.

Did you see the #'s of how the PO ran the engine, ie, 60 hours at 5800,
200 hours at 4,000 rpm's. Basically to see how it was run, beat on, etc...

500 hours isn't much but if it was dogged and run at red line for most of its life, I'd probably pass....

AND, why was it re-powered? Just for a larger engine or? Maybe a contact # for the PO and a quick chat with him would be nice... He has NOTHING to loose telling the truth...

Sorry it's a 2012. I tried finding the OP but no luck.

I haven't seen the motor or the computer read out yet, shop is 3 hrs away.

I'll check about the VST and other filters being changed.

Being it's crated, doubt if a leak down doubt if the shop is willing to perform.

I'm driving down on Friday so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Call Yamaha in Kennesaw with serial number. They should have record of any warranty work on this engine.

I don't know if they still had balancer issues with that year. The earlier year F150 got the balancer replaced under warranty.

You may check on that which is pretty important, especially if it did partially disintegrate-(probably not but...)

And a leak down test can be done with the engine not mounted. Just need the cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke and the tool introduced into the spark plug hole (with the crank locked up-no spin).

That can be done faster than a compression test...

was the testing he will show you done before it was put up?
needs to be run when you are there.
sitting in a crate for a year , not telling what all it will run like.
was it fogged and stored properly?

picking up and buying a used motor you have never run is not the best idea

Yeah, you're right but I just sold the Honda 150 4 stroke off my boat to upgrade to a Yamaha.

No used one advertised within 1000 miles radius from my area and buying new is not cost effective for me .

I'll drive to that shop and see what they're willing to do.

Haven't had a chance to get to the shop that's over 3 hrs away.
                      But will post afterwards.
                      Thx
