  • Beginner needs help finding a manual for Yam 55 BET

    Hey,

first of all, this is my first boat, just got it today, and have no prior knowledge in regards to yamaha or outboards in general.

The boat (Shetland 535 Suntrip) came without any manuals for the engine, and for my life, i can't find the Manual online.

It's a Yamaha 55 BET, 663 L 721054. I don't know the year of fabrication, anything. These numbers are pretty much all i got. Could anyone point me in a direction, or at least give me a rough estimation on when that engine was built? I went through dozens of pages dedicated to Yamaha engines, couldn't find a thing. I'm suspecting i'm looking for the wrong thing.

    Any help appreciated,

    cheers.

edit: ah, and there's a Z on the plate too.

Maybe that helps. Don't mind the two ugly blokes.

Yours appears to be a 1994 Beto model, the US equivalent being a C55TLRS. Click on 'Purchase Yamaha parts' on the top of the page, click 1994 and select the above model for a parts list.

My brother in law has a 1995 130 BETO on a Shetland Speedwell. Not sure about a manual though, others may be able to help.

Well the picture of the C55TLRS according to google looks very similar to that engine, seems like the previous owner had two more red stripes put on or something.

I'm assuming there's no difference in US and UK engines, apart from the designation? Meaning a US manual would be all i need?

You can go to the Yamaha US website and view a better copy of the parts catalog.

You can download a copy of an owner's manual for a C50 model that should be very similar to your model. For the manual look under the year 1998. That is as far back as Yam goes at their website.

            Cheers,

i think through the american designation i actually found the correct manual. Have to double check tomorrow when we start getting greasy if it actually is. It's for a 55B (ET i assume stands for electric starter and trim), but from 2001.

It'll do for now, to get an understanding on how to start, maintain etc that engine.

            Thanks for your help.

the c50 wont work for you.
its a 3cyl with a different carb and ign design.
try the C55 from 89-1995 US version.
              will be a lot closer.
they only imported them to the US from 1989-1995.

unless they have made more I got the last stator assy from japan a few years back for a C55TLRS.
the stators had a bronze bushing that wear out.
I have had limited success by peening the ID.
I tell what few customers I have running them to remove, clean and grease the stator yearly.

That's what i'm looking at right now. It's 2001 though.

Also.. I need the manual to actually find out what a stator is in the first place, hehe.

                  the US C50 from 99-02 was a 3 cyl with prime-start.
the C55 was a two cyl with a mechanical choke.

Got another question, trying to figure out what's wrong with the engine - one step in a "checklist" for the CDI unit talks about a "blanker coil".

What exactly is the "blanker coil", google doesn't really give an answer to that?

"2. Disconnect the yellow wire from the pack and retest. If the engine now sparks, the Blanker coil is likely bad. " is the step i'm looking at. Since, well, the engine cranks strong, but doesn't spark at all, and i heard that the CDI units on yamaha hardware often goes bad.

                      never heard of that before.
what service manual you looking in?

charge coil, pulser coil, and lighting coil are the coils I have read about on Yamaha's
measuring the out puts of the above coils
and the out put of the CDI should point you towards the problem.
good voltages into CDI but not out of it could be bad key or kill switch or wiring
Or bad CDI but they do not go bad very often

This is the manual we're looking at. And no, we never heard of that either, that's why i'm asking here.

Voltage into CDI is okay, as far as i can tell - but not out of it. We ruled out the killswitch (it actually isn't connected at all, because the previous owner apparently lost the lanyard).

We're still in the progress of figuring out what happened to the boat, there's some weird things. For example, it came with a sidemounted throttle "box" (Yamaha 703) - we don't know if that came with the engine when he bought it or not, because there's wires that the previous owner blanked off that we have no idea what they're doing. Without a wiring diagram, and i can't find one, it's really just guesswork at the moment.

I am sure that is for the after market CDI they produce.
might contact them and ask what the blanker coil is.

blanked off Wires coming out of 703 con*****er is normal. should go to tach or other gauges / remote tilt and trim switch if you mount them

service manual should show wiring diagram.
                          may have to buy

Did you test voltages with proper meter or DVA adapter?
did you try #1 test with the white wire?

Yeah, it's just bad if you have no idea what and where is blanked off, hehe. Found a diagram though, since we have to re-do the whole electrics on the boat, might as well do it properly including ignition lights, gauges etc.

We did test voltages with a proper multimeter.

Yes, we tried without the white wire, we did pretty much all the things on there except checking the "blanker coil" (hence me asking wth it is) and the resistances.

proper voltmeter would be one that is made specifically for these ignition systems not just a good DVM like Fluke, correct?
