2007 !50 leaking oil around cowling

Hello Fellas
My 150 seems to be leaking oil around the lower cowling.I did notice it a bit last year and kind off assumed it was from a recent oil change?
I did do an oil change recently .it didn't seem to be doing it since but I checked the level the other day and noticed it was down a bit!Probably from the change.So I topped up the level,I ran her pretty har yesterday for about 16hrs and when I got home there was the oil on the lower cowling again.

Checked the level again this am and still showing good?

I read something somewhere about possibly keeping the oil on the dipstick at half?

Any info would be great!!

They like to keep the oil at about mid way in the cross hatch area.

That's after tilting the engine to get the oil out of the crevices and back in the pan. Then check with the engine dead level. I put a level on the flat part above the prop (forgot the name, spank me 99!) and get the engine level.

I would suggest cleaning the pan, etc of all old oil so its a bit easier to see should something develop...

I gather "running it hard" was under 6,000 RPM's?

Yes was running her around 5500 for a good while!
It seems to me it has to do with the level as I ran it hard last week at about half and didn't see any oil!

How many hours on it?

As noted above, I'd give it a good cleaning, keep an eye on it and the oil level as well...

Shouldn't be leaking anything (if maintained) as new as it is with the low hours...

Ya will do and the only place I can see any sign of oil inside the engine compartment is under the shift linkage!

I read some horror stories about possible bad matching of the crank case!hope this is not the case

I think the shift linkage is about the lowest part of the cowl so any oil drip-page (oil filter change, etc) would run down there. You can sneek say an old t-shirt in that pan with some WD 40 and get under the wires and get that cowl (especially at the front), spotlessly clean.


Possibly related, the balancer is up there, just behind the under cowl fuel filter. Looks like two very short crankshafts in the case. Approx 10 bolts or so holding it on. Sounds like a bad washer machine when failing..

It had a re-call (or perhaps called something else) but Yamaha replaced it under warranty as the gears apparently "go away" . It doesn't use a gasket but just a special sealer. You may want to clean under there real good and keep an eye for any dripping.

I watched the guy do mine, maybe a half hour. No leaks or issues...

good advice I did see some sealant on that case alright I am going to give it a good clean and keep an eye thanks
