  • HPDI won't trim down unless control is in forward.

Our 2000 Z150 HPDI power tilt/trim only lowers the engine from the console when the control is in forward; otherwise the down switch is dead. Up is OK. The trim control on the engine itself both lowers and raises the engine. It's our third year with this engine and the problem just arose over the last 2 outings. I'm guessing this is a wiring issue. Any ideas on what to look for? Is it time to replace the 704? How hard is it to take the control apart and look for broken wires etc?

Another issue that cropped up this past trip out: when running at slow speed with the boat hard to port the engine cut out and would not restart - it turned over fine and just did not catch - almost as though the kill switch had been activated, although there was no alarm. I took the cowling off, poked around, no change. The transparent fuel tank levels were correct. Then, just as we were about to call for a tow we tried one more time and it started and ran OK back to the ramp. I was unable to duplicate the cutout with the motor on muffs.

I have no idea if the cutout is related to the trim issue; the timing may be coincidence. Is there a common wiring/ground issue that might cause both of these?
