Refurbished power head wrong crankshaft than original motor

I have a 1999 S200txrx outboard that through a rod and cracked the block earlier this summer. We searched for a while and finally figured undo and just received a refurbished power head for my motor.

During assembly the mechanic discovered the original fly wheel doesn't fit for on the crankshaft. We are having trouble getting the guys on the phone to confirm what they put in the block.

It is my understanding according to the shop that this block can be built as a 225 or 250 as determined by the internal parts. We haven't measured the crank to confirm yet. They believe and are trying to confirm ( part of why I'm here looking for a second opinion. ) that if it is the crank for a 225 or 250 that the carb and exaust can be adjusted to allow the higher horsepower. As well as the correct flywheel.

Wondering if any of this is true or if anyone has had experience with this situation.

Yes I believe that is correct. I haven't been out there yet to see for myself. Just using the term that was used on the phone.

Thanks. The big question is can the Hp be changed from a 200 to either a 225 or 250 with the proper adjustments if the crankshaft installed is for a higher than the original hp.

my thoughts are to get more HP you need more fuel and air to create the extra HP, along with letting all the exhaust out properly.
how could you do this with adjustments?

I have to agree with Yam, ^^^, BUT, you should still be able to use your carbs, etc. You just won't won't be getting the benefits of the 225 or 250 as your limiting your air flow... (educated guess)


IE, you have a 502 CI Chevy big block. If you put the 2 bbl carb from your 350 Chevy, it won't flow nearly enough air for what the engine is capable of flowing, thus much less performance

That is what I'm concerned with. They said they believe that Yamaha used the same block framework for different horsepowers. Just upgrading parts as you get bigger.
From what I've found the fuel/air mix can be increased with the carbs. Not sure if that means replacing or just adjusting the mix. And boring the exaust to allow the proper flow.

I would be perfectly happy if the engine remained at 200hp. Not sure what the effects of the different shaft and upgrading the flywheel assembly.

The shop that did the refurb has been giving us the runaround. Promised the block would be done then coming up with new excuses each time we called. Was told it shipped twice only to find out it didn't. Finally ships and we find it was done with a different shaft than we expected. I am ready to pull this thing from the motor and look elsewhere. Don't want to make modifications if they will effect the warranty. And don't want to spend more on parts that we shouldn't need if the powerhead was built as a 200hp.

The only other question in this situation is did Yamaha change the shaft size forcing a change to the flywheel rotor. Or did the shop screw up.

Sorry for venting. Just frustrated to the point of getting a complete used motor and moving on.

When replacing shaft, use new connecting rod's bolts - they are not reusable. Proper torque very important, good torque wrench is mandatory.

Shaft was replaced by the motor shop. Problem is it's a different diameter than the original which causes the flywheel rotor to not fit. Trying to determine best options going forward.

I agree, you really want a bolt on EXACT block, It'll cost you more in time and $ chasing around rotors and anything else that pops up.

if you paid with a CC, DISPUTE IT ASAP. Someone will call you then....

What you paid for it (and their location VS your location) might be worth small claims court. If you have a lawyer friend, a "friendly" note to them may help...

Good news from for me is my local shop is the middle man. They have paid the machine shop.
Looking at it it looks like another 2000 for the flywheel assembly and however much for the new carbs etc.

I agree at this point I'm ready to take my chances on a new used motor. Can't be any worse than where we are now. 2 months and nothing to show for it.
