I have a 1995 30hp 3 cylinder. I was going to replace the impeller today but the barrel nut on the shift rod is seized. I don't want to force turning it to avoid damage to the shift linkage under the powerhead. I've tried some penetrating lubricant but still no joy. Any suggestions to get it undone? Thanks

usually if heat does not work I have to snap it off.
this requires powerhead removal to repair the snapped pin.
it is also why you really should remove the case once a year and inspect and grease everything.

kinda like cutting off a set of duo-props from the Swedish drives.
the hubs are aluminium and the shaft is stainless.
use it in salt water and you had better follow Volvo's remove them every 30 days advice.
takes me about 2.5hr to cut a set off.
the replacement set is about 750 dollars.
ya just spent about 1000 dollars over 30 min of time and 2 bucks worth of grease.
no where on my shirt is a maytag label.

Yea those barrel nuts are a pain in the rear, even when not seized. As a few guys here recommended, putting the nut through a heat cycle is your best best.
Use a pinpoint torch (butane cigar lighter will work too in that tight space). If you have a bottle of automatic transmission fluid, squirt some at the top and bottom of nut. ATF is non flammable and works fantastic for loosening seized bolts. Heat the nut, allow to cool. Gently work the nut back and forth. Repeat. Good luck.Jason
