  • SX150 TXRZ-Lower Unit Drive Shaft Seal

Pulled my lower unit to check water pump (I'm going to post under another title on this). Found the upper unit top seal bad (see attachment). Did not find contaminated gear oil. My question is this: Although I will replace the two seals, should I replace the bearing as well at the same time? Can I replace the bearing without disassembling the lower unit, that is by just removing the seal housing?

Your should be able to remove the housing then the seals. (just the 4 bolts)

Measure the depth of the seals BEFORE removing.

The shop recommended examining mine due to its age and sure enough, the top seal spring had let loose (wasn't leaking).

The Master tech also pressure tested it once re-assembled...

That / those seals are apparently not un-common to fail over time...

Unless the bearing is damaged (mine was fine) you should be good as water hasn't apparently passed into the gear case..
