Problem solved...........bad Trim Sensor..........grounded the pink wire and the automatic oil fill system now works fine. I could not get the screws out to remove the Sensor........they are in a lousy position.

Yahoo, hoo, hoo. Success. Thanks for the feed back.

Those screws can be a bitch to even get to. Tougher still to remove on an older model.

I thank everyone here for their advice......it really helps to have a site like this when you have no knowledge of outboards.

I've got a new trim sensor on the way but I'm dumbfounded as to how to get the old one out. For now the simple fix was to unplug the pink wire and the black wire going into the sensor and plug the black one into the pink one going into the CDI.......prevents the trim sensor from breaking ground and disrupting the automatic oil feed.

Interesting thing is that the sensor must have been episodically failing.......the line on the gauge never worked (not on the other side either) but it didn't always cut the auto oiling system. In fact at one point I had the whole oil tank out on the deck with all the wires (what a bitch) and it just started working......tested it several time and it was OK......then when I put it back under the deck it stopped working again........falsely leading me to believe it was the wiring to the remote tank. I then realized that earlier the trim gauge showed a line and now it didn't so I honed in on the trim sensor and it worked. Throughout all this I never touched the trim control or motor. Weird....it just worked one minute then a half hour later failed.
