  • LU oil cap more than spec

Changed lower unit oil on my 05 T60TLRD.

Removed both screws, drained then filled from bottom hole.

Spec calls for 14.54 US oz.

I put in 20 US oz and still nothing out the top hole.

Nearest oil is 30 miles away. Maybe tomorrow.

Why would it take so much more than spec? Different LU? How to tell?

I've always just keep pumping until the oil comes out of the top hole....don't know or care about the amount. Walmart has good lower unit oil...better go get another bottle and fill it up!...

I agree with the above about not caring about the amount (unless I saw an obvious LOWER quantity go in). But...

-- Do you have the engine vertical?
-- How positive are you on your measurement of 20ozs?
-- Double check the capacity specs for your model?

Fill it up. Be sure to re tighten screws after first run after changing. Mine loosened somewhat after changing. Wonder why Yamaha uses the flathead screw instead of a hex? Easy to strip the head.

You are a couple of ounces shy, a T60 calls for 22.65 us oz. (see page 39 in the attached link)

As far as the slot head screw/plugs (both check and fill), Yamaha probably does not want customers to over torque it. It calls for only 5.1 ft.lbs. The seal on that is the fiber washer, not the threads. Compressing the fiber washer too much will defeat the purpose of the seal. I use a flat blade socket of proper size on my torque wrench and each time I check/replace the gear oil new fiber washers (Part # 90430-08020-00). They are about a buck a piece, cheaper if you buy a 10 pk.

D'oh! I copied the spec for the F60. The T60TR requires 22.65 US oz.

            Sorry

            And thanks for the responses.

You are very welcome! Use new washers/gaskets and don't over tighten those plugs!
