Can I use Mobil One synthetic in my F150? Hard to believe it would break down as Yamaha suggests? Yamaha brand oil and filters are pretty expensive!

I use Diesel synthetic oil in mine. Has better shear resistance and contains more zinc than std automobile grade oils. Marine 4 stroke oils contain more zinc than std automobile grade oils . Zinc is minimal in auto grade oils because it breaks down catalytic converters. Zinc is used as the wear protection and diesel formular most closely resembles the marine industry oils.

If the motor is out of warranty use what ever you wish.
If the motor is in warranty it might be a good idea to follow their suggestions.

Who has the time and resources to determine what brand of oil was being used in a failed motor in the first place, assuming the failure was some how oil related.
Oil system related failures are extremely low. Now fuel system related failures on the other hand are way up the list. Yamaha US pays out thousands of dollars in claims (which some will say is warranty but it is not) for fuel system related problems, trying to keep the customer happy. Even though Yamaha has nothing to do with the gasoline that anyone uses.
Let a cow eat bad grass, resulting in the cow being sick, and the cow's owner will feel sorrow and sympathy for the cow. He won't blame the farmer that sold him the cow. Let a Yamaha eat bad gasoline, resulting in the Yamaha being sick, and the Yamaha's owner will know that it is the fault of Yamaha. He will blame Yamaha and expect them to fix the motor free of charge.
