  • 2005 F150TXRD, clogged side water discharge hose

I just purchased a 2005 F150 with 132 hours, it looks like the guy never rinsed the motor. Motor was not shooting out water from the side hose when I tested the motor in the water before purchasing it. The boat/motor did make it to full RPM and ran well, no alarms went off. I changed all the fluids, spark plugs, fuel filter, water separator, thermostat, water pump and impeller. When I removed the poppet valve and thermostat I found lots of salt and black plastic looking debris. I tried blowing through the side hose with my mouth and could not, so I used a compressor and it unclogged it some. The motor shoots water out now the side hose when I run it on the muffs but I don't think the stream is strong enough. What should be my next step?

    Thank you,
    Jose Sirven

How strong do you expect the stream of water to be?

In a Yam four stroke it won't be much. Water flows through a device and a bunch of hoses before it reaches the tell tale. If water is coming out of the tell tale and the motor is not over heating you are just fine.

The water out of the tell tale is not the same water that flows through and cools the block and head by the way.

did you try removing as much of the salt/mineral deposits and plastic out of the passages while you had the stats out and flush with water before putting it back together?

They make stuff for flushing/removing deposits.

Rydlyme is one I can think of.
do a web search for it and how to use

I thought that was used to rid one of a disease caused by ticks!

        Damn I hate ticks.

I did use the garden hose with the nozzle and squirted water into the thermostat and poppet valve opening. I cleaned all the salt and black debris out that I could see. I also purchased a salt away flush kit which I will use today after I test run the boat in the bay.

Thank you for the feed back.

dropping the lower unit and hooking up a water hose to the water pipe, pulling the stats and leave the covers off, turn on the water full blast to let it flow up and out the openings.
shoot some compressed air into the water hose to help move stuff around inside the power head.
(takes some creative rigging, but it helps move loose stuff around , not the stuff growing on the surfaces though)

It will probably get rid of the disease if you shoot it through your plumbing, but the cure will probably kill you

I would rather be dead than have lymes disease.

To give you an idea of the water flow from the pisser (with no issues-on muffs). Plenty of water volume/pressure to the muffs BTW.

As posted, if you think there's still impeller parts in the engine, flushing from the bottom up with thermostat out, etc should help.

Awesome diagram! Is this also water path for 2 stroke's?

No. This is for the F150 only.

Some similarities with a two stroke but nothing can be taken for granted.

chiggers are worse than ticks. actually chiggers are the larval stage of ticks and eat the flesh at the hair folicule.

to many chigger bites over the years and to much google time .

                          It is pronounced as "chigroes".

Not only do they go for the hair follicle they like to go for certain hair follicles. Around the crotch area as I recall. I remember as kid being eaten up by the bastards after playing in the grass.

I did this and ran the boat yesterday in Biscayne Bay, ran well no overheat warning sound with full RPM. Water is still barely drizzling out of the side discharge hose.

Would it be a problem if I remove the exhaust cover plate that the thermostat, and poppet valve are attached to? What if I remove the elbow that the hose is attached to? Does that elbow fitting just screw off counter clockwise? If I remove the exhaust cover do I have to remove the lower part of the cowling?

                            Thank you

If removed, the exhaust cover should be reinstalled with a new gasket
                              AND the bolts tightened
                              - in a specific sequence
                              - in two passes at specified torque

I think it would be "difficult" to install properly without having the engine removed.

That elbow is not called out as a replaceable part. I suspect it is "pressed in"
I would not screw with it

But I am interested to read what the experts say
