  • Shift problems

Hi guys I'm new to the group but hoping to get a lot of useful info and helping others where I can.
I have a yamaha s115tlrv that when I throttle down and try to get in to neutral there is no distinctive click or way to tell your definitely in neutral. Is there any adjustments for that or is there possibly a problem in my lower unit.
    Thanks for any help

If you get under the engine cowl disconnect the SHIFTER CABLE from the engine. Check and make sure the shifter at the helm is in neutral.

Now, back at the engine, (you may have to spin the prop (not running) and manipulate the actual shifter (that the cable WAS attached to).

Once you know that's in neutral, it SHOULD DROP right on the pin. (Everything is aligned properly)

If its off a bit, there should be a lock-nut on the shifter cable. Loosen that and adjust the cable end until it simply drops BACK ONTO THE PIN.

Please post back what you find.

*Also, while that shifter cable is un-hooked, move the shifter at the console forward and back (maybe with a helper) and make sure the cable is indeed fully moving in each direction...

Forgot to mention, there's usually a mark on the engine, where the slid goes back and forth, that should be the center or neutral spot...

Good luck, hopefully its nothing deeper than that..

There's not much of a clunk or click going from forward or reverse into neutral...it just goes in neutral sorta easy...Compared to the distinctive clunk when going into a gear from neutral....

            Agreed ^^^^ 100%.

What you might do, until your comfy with the engine, is put the shift lever in neutral, then paint a smallish, white dot on both the lever and control box that line up.

*Thanks for the post Robert, basic's first, probably isn't an issue to speak of..

Checking the adjustment won't hurt and doesn't take long in any case..

Also, I don't know if your engine has it or not but Yamaha uses an ignition CUT OFF switch on some of its motors. When you try to switch from gear to neutral, it kills ignition momentarily, to make shifting to neutral easier (takes the load off the prop/system for easier getting into neutral)

Alright guys, so I checked the adjustment of the shift cable and found that it was off a little so I readjusted to proper position and seems to be a little better but I still don't have that definite feel of shifting in to neutral at the helm as I have on my 06 90 yamaha outboard. I will get it in the water this weekend and try it then. Thank you all very much for your help and I will let you know how it feels on the water.
