Hi - thanks for letting me in! I did a search but didn't find anything on the problem I'm having.
I just got a used '96 Century 1860 with a Yamaha 115 Saltwater outboard. I can run on plane for 20 or 30 minutes and the oil alarm goes off. First time it happened the pump had apparently kicked in by the time I opened the cowl because the oil level wasn't all the way at the bottom mark. Things seemed OK so we went on and had no more problems/alarms.
Last Friday I was going up a no-wake river and after about an hour the alarm went off again. I tied off and opened the cowl and the oil injector tank was at the low mark.
I tried the manual switch for the oil pump with the engine shut off the oil level didn't change. With the engine idling I used the manual pump switch and slowly refilled the reservoir on the engine and everything went fine. We chugged along for another 2 or 3 hours with no problems. When I checked the engine reservoir this afternoon and it's at the full mark.
My first thought is that it seems to me that there must be a sensor that's possibly corroded or only working part time that moves the oil from the 2 gallon main reservoir to the small injector reservoir on the engine.
My second thought is that since the oil didn't transfer until the engine was running, it must be a mechanical issue
Does anyone have any experience with a similar problem? Any ideas where I'd start looking for the sensor or is it more likely to be a mechanical pump going bad? So far I haven't found a sensor identified on a schematic.
Thanks for any info!
