No start. Turns over but doesnt start. Tried starting fluid, multiple positions on throttle, no luck. It does turn over. Just cranks and cranks.
Acts like no spark.
Looking for a troubleshooting guide for one of these outboards. Had no crank before, ended up being the neutral safety switch.

I noticed a switch on the ignition box back of motor, also noticed an unplugged red wire underneath the ecu.

Anyone help?

First off you need to TEST for spark, saying it "acts like no spark" is no help.

Does it look like the red wire (plug? or loose wire) goes into the ECU?

Simply moving it around the area that it reaches should help.

Sounds like no spark. Pull a spark plug, plug it back into the wire and ground it. Have someone turn the key and look for spark, There probably is none from your description..(possibly related to your red wire)


A little history on the motor too. Is it new to you, did it run before, did anyone work on it recently, when did it last run?

Tested for spark, no spark.

History, boat was purchased 1.5 years ago. Motor did run at time of purchase, but boat had been sitting for a long time. Like 8 years. I noticed a fuel odor and realized it needed a new gas tank.. that led to 1 year to get the tank built. So new gas tank installed, new fuel/water filter, used my electric pump to pull fuel from hose by motor.. got a nice purge. So it has gas.

Changed the rigging loom that was rotten. This is where I think the issue is as I had to disconnect all the wires and put them back through the new rigging loom. Hindsight being 20-20 should have fired her up before unplugging connectors.

I even have a Yamaha manual from Clymers and what i'm looking for is what wires actually need +12 power. I have seen shops set outboards on stands and fire them up.. so looking for info on that. That way I can work back and see whats not there.

The fuse holder with empty wire input looks like it was like that. Thanks guys for responding, should be something simple.

Is there any sensor that disable the ignition system?

No sensor being disconnected will inhibit an engine start but if the white wire in the ten pin harness is grounded then the motor will not start. That is what the white wire does. Grounded, no start or it will stop. Ungrounded, the motor can run.

Disconnect the ten pin connector at the motor. Jumper the starter motor relay to crank the motor. The motor should start. Jumper the terminal to the white wire to ground and the motor will stop.

The ignition module have any power requirements to it that come on any other plug?

I would image that a yellow wire provides 12 volts to the CDI. Yellow is from the key switch. Which comes down the ten pin harness. Referred to as "key on" power.
