Finally got a chance to get over to boat to snap a pic of the solenoid, aka FEV by yamaha. Townsend....i'll have to do the solenoid test like you suggested when I have someone else in the boat. I can't visualize the solenoid and turn key at same time. It's tucked in pretty good behind silencer. Thanks again everyone.

In the "run mode" (and POSSIBLY WARMED UP) the choke should be wide open. Yours for what ever reason, is NOT.. Missing clip, spring, etc, but it should open fully..
Yamaha, from what I've learned here, doesn't do everything the same and one model can be very different from a similar HP model.
*Also guys, click on the link up above I posted. its shows butterfly carbs and the solenoid with it for the choke AND IT is listed as a valve(in the parts section)Last edited by Jason2tpa; 08-14-2016, 03:08 PM.Jason

If I'm looking at the correct shaft, it looks like its machined for a circlip, which I don't see. (possibly causing the linkage to come off and jamb up CLOSED-RICH)
If possible, you could just pull the silencer so you can see what's going on with the butterfly's when you activate the solenoid...
You don't have to crank, just the run position and activate the choke..Scott

You would be correct. I thought the same. Remember originally I mentioned it needed a cotter pin to hold it onto the carb, but the parts schematic from boat.net says it's a O-ring (#25).
And I found out the loss of power issue exactly how you just suggested....I wanted to look closer at the carbs so I removed the silencer, noticing the solenoid was not hooked up. So I manually pulled down the solenoid, which when attached to the carb closes the choke. I was going to purchase that O ring, but your right, it's machined for a clip/pin.

Well, with time, the RUBBER o-ring broke down and went away. An "E" clip or similar would fix that. A new 0-ring would last awhile too..
NOTE RE POST #136: That choke should be staying OPEN when in the off or rest position.
If not, you might be missing a return spring or something. The choke should ONLY CLOSE (shut) WHEN YOU ACTIVATE the solenoid...Scott

hayzues chis.
I told ya its help on with an oring.
why you not believe?
there is NO return spring for the solenoid plunger.
the springs are part of the carb, that should NEVER be disassembled.
somebody simply left parts off and parts disconnected.
yes Virginia its that simple.

As it stands right now, from what he's posted, (and neither of us can see it), he says their closed.Last edited by TownsendsFJR1300; 04-13-2016, 05:18 PM.Scott

The manual does depict a fuel enrichment valve. Just another Yamaha error. To be expected. Is Yamaha incompetent or do they just not give a shit about data errors and/or emissions?
The linkage is not machined for a circlip. It is machined to hold an O ring in place.
The choke plates should be OPEN if the solenoid is not being energized with an exception.
The exception being if the choke knob is pulled out. Or the linkage is screwed up such that it thinks the knob is pulled out.
We have certainly digressed from oil leaking around an unsealed spark plug.

You're correct, as usual. Just another reason why NOT to type when sitting in traffic. Manual does end in 01-92. At least I know i have the correct manual even though yamaha mislabeled the solenoid. Thanks boscoe.

Just wanted to update ya Boscoe and gang...picked up and installed today the very special $5 rubber O-ring. Fits nice and snug on carb choke lever. Problem solved. On to the next problem...troubleshooting the digital tach glitch. It's an older model one, reads only rpm, tilt, oil, temp. No buttons. If you know of any literature that could please send me there. Thanks.
