  • Just Bought an Engine | Recommended Changes?

I just bought a 2011 F60 yesterday from a guy who seemed a little lax in his knowledge of boating and outboards. The engine ran well through the full range of RPMs and has only 150 hours on it, so I'm not concerned about damage or wear, but I'd like to address whatever issues there might be as a result of this guy's ignorance or laziness.

What would folks do right off the bat in a situation like this? Empty the gas tank? Change the crankcase oil? Change the lower unit oil? Change the fuel filter? All of the above (and more)?

Fire away. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I'm ready to get to work.

if maint is unknown simply do it all.
    water pump inspection/replacement.
t stat and pressure control inspection/replacement.
    change engine oil/filter.
    dump fuel,drain the VST.
    change the gear lube.
    change engine fuel filters.
have a refreshing beverage and go play.

Appreciate the feedback. Going to bite the bullet and go ahead and do that. Already contacted my mechanic.

A lot of this can be done by the owner if they read up and are mechanical inclined) and have the proper tools

Run a can of Yamaha CCC at end of season or when a miss or rough idle problem occurs.

Check the RACOR after EVERY trip for water and drain it.

Get the see-through RACOR with the plastic bowl.

You want engine problems - pick up some water. Don't check your RACORs (and drain a little gas off) after every trip - and you'll run into engine issues.
Appreciate all the feedback. When you switch over to a Racor filter, do you need to install the mount for that filter too, or will it spin on to the mount you already have?
