  • 1999 30hp mshx shift shaft boot leaking

Hi, I'm rebuilding the water pump on my 1999 30hp mshx outboard and have found that the shift shaft boot is leaking during pressure testing. Is a little leaking from the boot top normal? I cant find a procedure for replacing the shift shaft boot in my shop manual. Do I just unscrew the retainer and pull the whole shift shaft and mount the new boot onto what looks like double flares on the shift shaft and will I have a problem re-inserting the shift shaft into the gear case? Also, would you put any dressing on the water pump gaskets and if so, what would you use? Would silicone sealing grease like "MPT" be ok?
Thanx for any help or guidance,

What do you mean "little leak"?

I have that same model just 1995 and (L) shaft and on my SM on page 111 say the LU should hold pressure of 14psi for 10 secs.

You shouldn´t be concerned about remove the shift shaft (is easy remove and then insert it again just pay attention of what you're doing)

Replace the boot from shift shaft is so easy/logical that doesn´t need to be mentioned on SM (IMO)

Is not suposed to use silicone or any product to seal

If WT gaskest are good most of the time I re use them but if you replace old gaskets even better.

Does looking at the parts fisch help?:

1999 30MSHX Yamaha Outboard LOWER CASING DRIVE 1 Diagram and Parts

Which part specifically is the issue?

And no, you shouldn't have any leaks. What pressure are you checking with?

        1999 30hp shaft boot leak

Thanx for the quick replies. I may be just a little to sensitive. This leak in the shaft boot may be within the specs you put forth. I'm new at this so I'm a little unsure of what is normal. I'll just mount the water pump gaskets with no dressing and check the gearcase oil for signs of water after rebuild. I can always slip another shaft boot on if I need to. Thanx again,

When you pressurize at 14 PSI, squirting some soapy water at the boot should let you know if your good or not.

Of course the LU needs to be empty of oil when checking...

best I recall if you pull the shift shaft you get to pull the prop shaft to reinstall the shift shaft.

            a leak is a leak.

1999 30mshx shift shaft boot leak

Hi, Thanx for the input. I didn't see any sign of water in the gear oil I drained from the lower end during disassembly so I'm hoping the small leak in the top of the shift shaft boot came from my exceeding the rated pressure in my pump during the pressure test. Anyway, I'm not in a hurry to pull the shift shaft. If testing the gear oil shows contaminants I'll try just unscrewing the retainer an pulling only the shift shaft boot first and pull the shift shaft only if nothing else works and I have to. THanx,
