  • outboard alarm

2005 Yamaha 70TLRC 2 stroke, running with console controls.
Sat for 8 - 9 months due to my broken ankle.

Started it last weekend and fired up almost immediately, as usual. Standard Yamaha.
Idled for about 2 mins getting away from launch. Ran < 5 min at mid range RPM and started to alarm at control unit.
Engine pumping water just fine and a bit of smoke coming from engine like it was getting oil but cold.
shut it off, looked things over, started it again, still alarming, shut it off immediately and looked some more. Could find nothing wrong so started it again and it ran just fine rest of the day, alarm gone. Manual says to run 50:1 if stored for more than 12 months. I am guessing the oil line may have had a little bit of air in it from sitting a while. I always store the engine down / vertical. Hope I did not hurt the engine.
Anything else it might have been?

2 stroke Yamahas have overheat and low on oil alarms .
It would never see or alarm because of air in a line or low oil flow.

Did you see anything on your gauges that would indicate what the alarm was?

      Boat has no gauges.
      Oil tank full
Water pump working, steady stream at bleed hole.

Owner's manual says to run at 50:1 mix at idle, if stored for more than 12 months, says to watch for oil flowing through feed pipe. Says "After any air in the oil lines has been expelled, system should supply oil normally. If no oil flow after 10 min, see dealer"

Steady stream doesn't mean it's not over heating.

all the tell tale indicates is that the water pump is working.
          nothing more nothing less.

it DOES not tell you if the cooling system is working or blocked.

Yamaha did not use any flow sensors in the oil lines.
only oil alarm is for tank level.
my guess would be a stuck thermostat.

That being the case I would guess thermostat too, I didn't even know they had one. Don't know about outboards, but most stuck thermostats I have experienced, have stuck open rather than closed. Is thermostat fairly easy to change?

By the way, thanks all for the info and advice.

yes , quick and simple to change as long as you do not break bolts

Yeah, the dissimilar metals issue sucks. Will be holding my breath on bolt removal. Will reinstall with just a touch of anti- seize on the bolt threads.
New thermostat and gsk on the way.
                Again, thank you

make sure the stuff you use does not have copper in it.

For certain, no copper. Was a bit surprised when I went to loosen the cap screws, they were not much more than finger tight. Nothing leaking, but as loose as they were, it would not have surprised me.
