1986 175 ETLJ Prop Shaft Replacement

Damaged my prop and shaft at the end of last season called various local shops yesterday for quotes on replacing the shaft. One of the shops stated the powerhead needed to be removed for prop shaft replacement is this correct? Also if anyone knows of a honest mechanic in the phoenix area it would be very helpful. I do not know much about that old motor, but cannot think of a reason for the power head to come off

Also consider/research the possibility of locating a similar used/rebuilt lower unit that would be compatible and bolt right on....just an alternate possibility...
