  • 9.9 water pump torque settings

    Hi,
What is the torque setting for the water pump housing bolts on the 2006 9.9 4-stroke high thrust?
Do the bolts need Loctite ?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

    From the manual

Water pump housing bolt : M8

    18N-m, 1.8kgf-m, 13.3ft-lb

    Apply LOCTITE 572

Don't forget to apply grease to the inside of the water pump housing before installing the impeller.

I've always just used a good, one-hand snug tightening on those bolts...it's not a highly stressed part and shouldn't require gorilla torque....I just assemble with a dab of marine grease on the threads...never a problem so far....

        Do The Job Correctly

You don't want to use grease for a host of reasons !! If you want to do the job the right way, Use Impeller Lubricant (Glycerine) I get mine from Volvo penta or Johnson pump...Too many watch B.S youtube vids about boat repair..The few I've seen Are WRONG....I Ask...Do you want the 747 mechanic that your flying to NYC today to watch youtube vids on jet repair...

I use Palmolive LIQUID dish soap for installing the SS cup onto the impeller (plenty slippery and it washes out quickly once run).

***My YAMAHA F150 manual does call for locktite AND calls for Yamaha waterproof grease (type "A") ON THE IMPELLER(PAGE 6-7)***

          (Kinda surprised about that actually)..

          Your manual may vary...

          Snip from my manual:

From the Official Yamaha T9.9 4 stroke manual Page 6-15

"Apply grease to the inside of the water pump housing."

I am really not quite sure what part of "FROM THE MANUAL" is confusing to some.

            Sheesh

Hmmm. That's EXACTLY what YOUR POST (#2) starts out with: "From the manual" ???

From a shop manual??......... Same place you got your torque #'s from?

Have you seen water pump replacement procedures in an owners manual???

              And I didn't type T9.9, I typed "from my Yamaha F150 manual".

Perhaps that's where you got confused...

              sheesh

Perhaps we should add "righty tighty, lefty loosey" too?

I thought you were quoting me after stating the same thing.

                  Its apparently a mis-communication so please dis-regard.

We're (as far as I'm concerned) fine.

Come to think of it, if you have a manual to tell you to use grease in the water pump,I would think it would give you the torque specs too.
But I know where your post was aimed

                      Diolch yn fawr

Many thanks for the replies and suggestions, so just hand tight with a short spanner really, but have set them to the correct torque
I use silicone lubricant, the same stuff used for O rings, for the impeller and housing as I had always assumed mineral oil based grease rotted rubber, I also have a tin of vegetable oil based grease that I use eg to ease rubber bushes into place for the same reason. I used to use washing-up liquid (Fairy brand) for this but stopped when I learned that it contains a lot of salt.
I have the Clymer Shop Manual and it says "torque settings in Table I" but they aren't...
                      Regards
                      Tim
