  • f115 leaks oil from side of lower unit

Small amount of oil leaking from the side of lower unit.I have my water pump kit and lower unit oil ready to install, i will do a pressure test at that time. How much pressure should i use? I will be following instructions from a SELOC manual also any comments on using a SELOC manual?

A Seloc manual is better than no manual, but not by much! Water pump and oil change should be easy enough.

leaking from side of lower unit does not tell us much, where is the lube coming out of?

If the TOP vent plug is NOT tightened to full torque, it will seep.

Just replaced mine as it was starting to seep. The 6' lbs was quite a bit more torque (with a torque wrench) than I was doing with a screw driver alone...Nice and dry now with new gaskets.

Obviously, make sure you have the OEM gaskets installed...

115 leaking oil at air vent

The leak comes from the single side hole beside the water intake, some refer to this as an air vent but I am not sure what it's called.looking at the scematic it looks like it might have some function with the shift cam housed inside the lower unit.Going out today changing and checking crank case oil. Starting her up, then draining lower unit oil checking that.

its called a water pump drain hole.
if gear lube is leaking out of it the driveshaft seals have most likely failed.

Lower unit oil/lube can be detected by the smell of it.
It smells completely different than crankcase oil.
Put a little on your finger and then smell it

You'll be able to run the engine W/O water to the pump!

                      Self lubing!!

It might overheat without water to the block and head though

Absolutely, but it won't burn up the pump!
