Lower unit problem

Thanks for the reply on my previous post. I know it is almost impossible to diagnose engine problems over the phone or internet. I do have a question which can be answered if anyone out there has ever put together a lower unit 1988-? 6 or 8 hp. Part# 6G1-45635-00-00 which is the shift plunger one end is flat the other end is rounded. My question is which end faces toward the shift cam assembly 6G1-44150-01-00. I have looked at parts diagrams and it isn't clear enough to tell.
