    yep plastic timing gear teeth.
funny thing the cast iron/link belt replacements still lasted about 75K miles before they gave issues.
just the iron gear did not clog the oil pick up strainer with debris.

whats funny is the truck/industrial stuff used a double roller chain set up.

Plastics are used more and more to replace traditional metal components.
A manufacturer would have believed the plastic gear should do the job. They will be very reluctant to go back to metal, but I betcha they are looking for a better plastic and they haven't found it yet.
Technology by definition should replace older technology, it's the rat race that has been created.

We have evolved. We went from your issue of the ECU misreporting engine hours, to engine life in hours in general, to stuff that might result in the number of hours being less than otherwise desirable. Such as a timing chain breaking to a timing belt breaking. To plastics wearing out.

Happens all of the time. We start out in one direction, head off into another direction, and sometimes come back around in a 360 degree circle right back to where we started from.

You must not be married. If so, you would know how it goes. Ask the wife a question about X and next thing damn if you aren't being criticized for doing Y. Or not doing Z.
