  • 9.9 Four Stroke Stop Switch

I have a 2001 9.9ELRZ four stroke which is powering my sailboat. I have dual remote controls, one being in the pilothouse and the other in the ****pit.

When in the ****pit, I can push the start button on the engine to start, but the only way I can find to stop the engine is by pulling the emergency lanyard. The manual indicates the engine stop button can be pushed, but this is incorrect as there's only an emergency stop switch which is activated by pulling the lanyard connector.

It's a pain to have to pull the lanyard and re-connect it whenever I want to stop the engine. The pilothouse control have a key, but I don't see a stop switch on the motor other than the emergency stop switch.

Am I missing something or is there a way to fit a push button stop switch to the motor, perhaps replacing the emergency stop switch?

    Thanks.

What brand of remote controls? Yamaha or other? If Yamaha, are they side mount 703 type or top mount 704 type?

You say you have a start button. Yamaha brand or other?

An F9.9ELRZ would normally be started with a Yamaha key switch. Is a key switch used anywhere?

Normally you need a switch to turn the motor on. Apply 12 volts to it that is. Then another switch is used to start the motor. Finally there is a switch to stop the motor from running.

Should not be a big deal to simply add another switch (key or button type) to stop the motor from running. It would be doing just what is being done with the kill switch is activated.

The boat has top mount controls in the pilothouse and side mounted controls in the ****pit. The instrument panel in the pilothouse has a key as well as the oil pressure indicator light (also on the engine itself).

There's no keyed switch on the motor or side mounted controls, just a start button on the motor and the emergency stop switch (both OEM Yamaha) operated by a lanyard. I don't want to replace the start button on the motor with a keyed switch.

Power to the engine is on a main switch inside the pilothouse. This provides security in that the engine cannot be started with the start button when power is not switched externally to the motor when I'm away from the boat. This is a good feature.

I recently found a replacement type stop switch which apparently should work by either pushing the stop button on the switch or by pulling the lanyard. The switch is a Seachoice 11681.

If anyone has experience with this switch (or the Seadog equivalent) in terms of function and reliability, it would be appreciated.

Actually, as it turns out, this type of switch still relys on pulling the lanyard to stop the engine.

Anyone know of a push button switch or similar which can be added to stop the engine without pulling the lanyard?

The diagram for the switch shown indicates that is can also be used as a stop switch by simply pressing the button with the lanyard installed. Of course if the lanyard is pulled then the motor will also stop. Many Yamaha kill switches work in this same manner.

Any single pole single throw momentarily closed switch will work. The switch is normally open. Pressing a button or moving a toggle closes the switch which causes the motor to stop. One side of the switch gets connected to ground. The other side of the switch gets connected to the white wire at the key switch panel.

I thought the Seachoice switch would work too, based on the chart, but when I called a distributor they said it only works on the lanyard so it's unclear. I decided today to buy one anyway, since they are inexpensive and worth a try.

The stock Yamaha switch, unfortunately, only stops the engine when the lanyard is pulled.

If the Seachoice switch doesn't work, I'll try something else. Maybe wire in a separate switch, or maybe I'll replace the push button starter button with a keyed switch.

Probably won't get to the boat until May, so any ideas appreciated.

Could the original stop button have been on the original tiller supplied with the motor? I presume there is no tiller therefore no switch.
