  • 2020 Yamaha 115 - Shuts off randomly, Gauges too

Encountered something recently that seems to be persisting. It happened 4 times last I was out. Engine starts fine, no alarms, nothing, randomly engine will shut off and gauges will turn off as well. I flick the key, gauges pop up and engine fires up on turn. There's no pattern or reason, happened once while underway, once in reverse, 2x at idle, and once on muffs when boat was on blocks.

My first step is to replace wire ends on battery and to selector as 2 of the ground wires look a little rough. Will attempt to look for my multimeter and test resistance of each lug/connector. I will also check the ground and connections on the engine block that go to the battery. My thinking is it's some bad connection as the gauges were turning off too. Is there anything I'm not thinking of that I should also check? OB is always serviced on schedule but these wires are old from previous outboard.

I would be checking the key switch if flicking it makes things work again

Agree - from what you wrote, it sure sounds like a key issue.

Side note... testing resistance doesn't really tell much. It typically only shows a complete failure. A single strand of metal will show no resistance... but it's not enough to pass enough amperage.

Oh... since you found an issue at the key, but are looking to other areas... is there more to this story that makes you think the problem is NOT at the ignition switch?
