  • Timming on a 1998 s150 txrw

Hi , i am new here so I hope I'm entering this correct.
I have a 1998 s150 txrw runs pretty good for an old 2 stroke . I have a manual and decided tp peek through some settings. I havent changed anything but am curious as the manual states 23 degrees btdc but it is actually set at 21 degrees btdc. ( which is s200 setting) and pulser coil seems set at s200 also. Should I just leave alone as is ? as all runs or can I get better operation and fuel savings?
    Thanks .

how do you know what the timing is set at?
    a timing light maybe.
there is usually a + or- also in the specs, so it does not need to be exact

and what are you saying about a pulser coil setting. I was never aware of a setting for a pulser coil?

The degree's are stamped in flywheel top surface and when rotated around to the pointer someone has previusly used a marker on 21 degree's.
The instructions in manual have you move the magnito control link to its stop. this should have the indicator on the pulser line up with a mark on the underside of flywheel ( timming plate)
It just looks like someone previous has timmed it as a s200 rather than a s150? Any real differance?

2 degrees is not something to worry about,
but I would recommend using a timing light on it while running to see how close the #1 sparks that plug . just because a mark is on something does not mean that is where it is sparking.

you would need help while running on calm water or use a test prop while tied off to a pier or in a test tank.

what spec adjustment is there for a pulsar coil are there different marks for the 200 and 150 you move the pulser coil to?

is it possible someone changed the powerhead to a 200?

Bumpa5P2: if it runs good, and spark plugs not fouled - do not change anything. check adjustment by the book only, service manual for YOUR motor. you will not save on gas, but possible screw it up. you already save a lot by not buying newer motor. just make sure your motor correct model and code.

Thanks For your comments everyone. I am going by service manual and I did buy this motor as a used rebuilt years ago so I never considered it could have been a differant powerhead. My plugs do not foul but this motor has always run a little oil rich. especialy on start up but I never wanted to mess with it. all 6 plugs are usually on the darker side with no fouling..

add ring free to gas. 2 stroke always smoke on start up, due to choke closed.

Not too sure smoking is anything to do with the choke, you don’t suppose the oil mixed with the fuel might be the reason? Why do people always suggest additives?

gasoline in engine burns with oxygen in air at ratio Gas/air 1/15 at norm. Choke in closet position create RICH mixture, more gas and oil and less air. plenty explanations on youtub
2stroke, as you know, runs on mix oil and fuel 1:50 . at certain rpm it's ok, at certain rpm it needs more oil. oil lubricate and burns. spark plugs gets fouled and piston rings gets fouled with carbon. Yamaha ring free LOOSE carbon particles make them expelled via exhaust. Do not use Yamaha Ring Free in a car - carbon particles will clog catalytic converter. Do not use car additives in 2 cycle, as those additives mostly alcohol, that increase burning temperature in combustive chamber and ideally has to burn out carbon. They don't.
