  • New 2023 Yamaha T25 XWTC, 20 hours, belt noise / squeal?

Motor is about 10 months old with about 20 hours on it. It's the 25" extra long shaft.

Has anyone heard this belt noise / squeal before? Know what might be causing it?

The noise is not consistent, it doesn't do it at the dock during idle or when in forward or reverse gear at the dock. We only notice it when motoring our sailboat back in the channel, or once, it did it on the way out. A lower throttle speed seemed to make the noise happen slightly more often and the squeal last slightly longer. It seems like after motoring back in the channel, when we drop the speed down for 5 minutes to lower the sails and then power back up to get to the dock, the noise goes away. Or at the dock, when we reverse to slow the boat, the noise goes away, no longer makes the noise at the dock.

Why not take it back to the dealer, it should be under warranty.

Yeah, I probably will, but it's a huge pain to lift it off the back of the boat and get it in a truck back to the dealer and then back on. Its weight is about 155lbs, takes 3-4 guys to safely lift it off the boat and put it back on. I was hoping someone might recognize the noise and there might be an easy / quick solution

Look closely at your video and pay close attention to the pull start handle and the guide where it comes through the cowl. Looks like it's moving around. Take the cowl off and see if the pull start assy is loose on top of the engine. Should be three or four 10mm bolts holding it on. The sound is like that cover is touching the flywheel???
