Yamaha T9.9 starter gear size?

A real starter issue on a T9.9 EXRX starter -- the 'star' gear is not engaging with the flywheel. It seems too small -- I am having my current starter professionally cleaned and checked out and I have ordered a new gear -- however -- the gear does look like it will be too small -- attached is the old unit -- any help is greatly appreciated -- I have had four or five people that have worked on it, including two Yamaha dealers.

The gear looks nasty dirty but its way too far away from the flywheel. That gear is NO where near that worn....

Is the engine "new" to you?

Looks like either broken starter mounts, a VERY WORN STARTER SHAFT bushings or more likely, the WRONG STARTER ASSEMBLY.

I gather the starter is NOT shimmed out and away from the flywheel, correct?
