  • Remove T/T Unit

    Re: F90TLR, 2006

The service manual say to remove the T/T to remove the lower and upper mounting shafts. The lower was easy but the upper is rusted into the motors main frame.

The circle clip for upper shaft is on the inside of the main frame and difficult to get at. Not impossible but not easy. The circle clip was extremely rusted (southwest Fla) and came off in pieces.

I tried hitting with a screw driver/hammer and couldn't move. I then tried with HFreight air chisel/bit but it's hard to get in there. Bottom line it didn't work.

My next move is to apply heat via the Mepps torch but I'm not sure how much heat I can apply. I don't want to damage anything.

    Any suggestion?

I'm in Matlacha, next to Cape Coral.

I've tried hitting from both sides.

My next move may be the Mepps torch.

Did you tilt the motor to the full up position, lower the up lock device, and then trim back down ever so minutely so that there is no load on the pin? Of course if you have removed the lower shaft then the only load on the upper pin would be the weight of the trim and tilt unit itself.

The pin goes in one way and has to come back out the same way. Get a bigger drift punch. A long and damn big one. Hammer the pin on the side of the circlip. A dead blow hammer works best to impart all of its energy on the part being struck.

B99 good to hear from you.

Do you think I can use the Mepps torch and put some heat to this pin w/o doing any damage?

I heat them all the time.
          only I use oxy/acetylene.
I also have a 2.5" by 12" brass bar to get it moving.
