  • YDS packages - investment?

Having 2 engines now on my Cobia thinking I might be good idea to pick up the YDS software/cable package so I can trouble shoot stuff. Is this a good package for the DIY person trying to keep stuff working and to get out of a bind when I need to find out what has gone wrong with my 10 year old engines. Looking for input from folks who have been there and and done it with the YDS software etc. etc.

    Thanks,

    Michael

I bought the software/cable on eBay a couple years ago,
at the time the "going rate" was ~$100,
and it was a 'weekend sale" for $50
    so I went for it.

    I have a 2006 F90 (~750 hrs) and a 2005 F225 (1400 hrs)

So far, I haven't "needed" it to address any problems

but it's been fun to access the running hour data
    check the various operating parameters
and practice actuating the LP pump, IAC valve, etc.

I'm glad I have it.....and since I "do all my own work"
eventually it may be VERY helpful

I think the Yamaha service manual is a better investment. Even more beneficial is near fanatical attention to routine and regular maintenance. Next is avoid fixing what isn't broke. Then find a good Yamaha Master Mechanic. They sound expensive until you suffer the sequences of orangutans that "service" all makes for guarenteed lowest price.

After struggling on my own with the aftermath of orangutans and general neglect, some knowledgable folks got me straightened out. Now attentive maintenance and clearing the boat of all fuel between trips has made ever one successful.
