  • Hooking up Analog Gauges to a 2015 F70LA

I need some help finishing a install on some analog gauges. I have a 2016 Sylvan (smokers craft) 8520 cruise and fish pontoon. It is rigged with a Feb/2015 F70LA outboard. Only a Tach and Fuel gauge came with the boat. Both were analog. I have installed 7 gauges (Teleflex Sahara Series Tach, Oil Pressure, Water Temp, Fuel, Voltmeter, Trim/Tilt and 35 mph Speedo). I have all the grounds, Ignitions and Illuminations wired up. I have not ran the boat, but the Fuel and Volts work and all the gauges light up. I ran the speedo tube to the back and hooked it up to the tube with a blocked off barb in the front of the engine. I also ran 3 wires to the back for trim, water temp and oil pressure signals to send through.

    My questions are:
What wires do I use in the engine harness for Trim, Water Temp and Oil Pressure gauges?
Do I need sending units for any of my gauges to work?
If I do need sending units please advise the Part #'s and were they would be installed on the engine.

    Thank you in advance

The F70 does not use an oil pressure sender/sensor. You would have to add an aftermarket sender/sensor of your choice that is compatible with your gauge.

Yamaha offers a water temperature sender for use with their temperature gauge but it might not be compatible with your gauge. Most gauges have senders made expressly for a specific gauge.

There is a connector in the engine pan that is normally connected to another harness referred to as a trim/oil harness. The Yamaha specific harness runs to the helm for connection to a Yamaha specific tachometer and trim gauge. Wires in the harness are used for (1) the trim signal, (2) over temperature warning light and (3) low oil pressure warning light.

With Yamaha stuff it will be all plug and play. When non-Yamaha gauges are used some cutting and splicing of wires may be needed.

Here is a diagram that shows a typical F70 engine to Yamaha analog gauges.

      Thanks boscoe99,

This diagram is what I needed. I have found no other help on this. I've been searching for a while now. I appreciate your reply greatly.

The Trim gauge model I have says it is for "Mercury/Mariner, Volvo DP/SX, Yamaha 2001 & newer". I will try to utilize the harness (splice and connect) for this and see if it works out for me.

Sorry for my ignorance.. The electric water temp said in the description "Electric, Requires Sender". No specific engine mentioned.
Could I Utilize the Port where the OEM Thermo is located? Since I'm going all analog? Of course saving the extracted thermo and harness.

On the Oil Pressure gauge... The description says "Electric Oil Pressure Gauge". From what I have gathered this would have to have a Sender for it as well. Teleflex (my Gauges) has a sender for this gauge. It sounds like I will need to order this as well.

        boscoe,

If I'm reading this diagram right. The lower left Pink/black wire is the trim wire. Is this correct?

          nope
now ya be a rigging and a digging.
would have been easier and cheaper to rig it with command link square package.
Teleflex does make a temp sender that mounts with a bracket to hold the sensor against the head/block.
most likely your going to have to make your own bracket.
on the oil pressure, your going to have to make a T fitting or your going to lose the low oil pressure alarm.
I have no clue to the thread size on the oil pressure switch.

on the overtemp, your engine has 1 thermosensor and 1 thermo switch.
both have to be there for the overtemp alarm/control to work properly.
the thermosensor simply has to be there or ign timing base gets fixed at about 10*BTDC,idle speed increases and it runs like cwapola at low speeds, rich at high speeds and WOT may or may not be reached.

            Nope.

The solid pink wire is from the trim sender. Stays pink in the harness to the tachometer. Remains pink as it jumpers to the trim gauge which also has a pink wire.

Pink/black is for the low oil pressure ground.

Pink/white is for the over temperature ground.

Or maybe it is vice versa on the pink/black and pink/white. Speaking from a tired memory.

I am with ya boscoe on the p/w vs p/b.
I could look it up but it would be useless and he can us the for gauges anyway.
all they are is ground paths for the visual indicates.

                Thanks rodbolt,

After looking at that thermo, I followed it to the brain. I knew then, It had to stay.

After scratching my head for a while now. I think I'm going to utilize what gauges I have that I can get to work. I'll have to get Command gauges later. I wanted a nice looking gauge cluster filled up. But now I see EVERYTHING even marine applications are going digital.

Here's what look I was going for.

Could I Utilize the Port where the OEM Thermo is located? No. As Rodbolt says the engine needs its own thermosensor. One thermosensor normally cannot drive two devices. Since I'm going all analog? Of course saving the extracted thermo and harness.

Teleflex (my Gauges) has a sender for this gauge. It sounds like I will need to order this as well. I have heard of folks taking out the existing pressure switch, installing a T fitting of some sort into the pressure switch port, installing the switch into one outlet of the T and the pressure sender into the other T outlet. There is not a room there to work.
                  Comments are above.

So go solid pink to the send post on my Gauge?

Yes. Solid pink in the trim/oil harness.

NOT the solid pink in the ten pin main engine harness. That is the ground for the warning buzzer.

There is no such thing as too many gauges.

At this point Water Temp and Oil Pressure is not going to work for me. I'm not going to alter under the hood to make this work (jimmy rig) I'm not a jimmy type of guy. Command is the way to go but I'll have to wait on that. I really need my Tach, Trim, Volt and Fuel. From what I've read on this form. Failures due to oil are not a common problem. I check my Oil after every use and I would see a puddle on my driveway before I head out. Water pressure and temp are critical but I always listen for the pee spout. I fish flats on this and trim is something I really need.

                          Boscoe,

I found the 4 pin plug in the engine pan. 2 pink/black, 1 pink, 1 pink/white. What I do not like is the room I have to work in that area. I di ele grease and heat shrink all connections on this boat. Salt water is harsh.

you can use a small pick and release the pin latch and remove the pin from the connector.

Would I need the Trim harness for the command series gauges?
