  • Motor Oil in gas tank!

Was rushing today and not paying attention when I went to fill up the gas in my 1999 Lund with a 100hp 1999 Yamaha outboard and intended to grab the fuel additive and instead grabbed a quart of 5w30 motor oil I had in my trunk. I know - totally stupid - both containers are black. Anyways I poured about 1/10th to 1/20th of the quart into the gas tank. I realized what I did and really couldn’t do anything at that point other than fill up with gas. It was 6 gallons low (27 gallon tank).

My question: Do I just do nothing and it will just burn off or will it cause any damage to the engine? I plan to fill up the gas after every use ( usually burn 3-5 gallons per trip) to further dilute it over time.

Can’t believe I did this and feel like an idiot.

Thank you! Two other mechanics told me the same thing.

four cycle motor oil has higher resistance to burn, than two cycle motor oil, that burns comparatively easy. burning four cycle oil in two cycle motors will result in a massive carbon build up, compared to lower carbon buildup - all variations equal - especially off piston rings. of course mechanics tells you it's ok. marinas no longer repair engines, but replaced them.

1, 2, or 3 ozs of that oil in 20 gallons of gas is nothing to be worried about
