  • Yamaha 200's setup,tie bar;toe inn or straight...

Replacing the tie bar ball joints. I have twin 200,25" shafts, on a Grady Sailfish, should they be set straight running ,or toed in or toed out?

This is a very controversial subject. Don't know why but it is.

Yamaha and most engine makers recommends that the motors be towed out such that the wake of the motors come together about 25 - 50 feet behind the boat.

Some will 'spearament to find works best for their particular configuration.

I like the get up to cruising speed and cut one motor loose to find it's natural orientation philosophy, whether it is toe in, toe out or perfectly aligned. .

There is also the controversy of what direction is toe in and toe out. Some say that converging prop wash is toed in as opposed to your toed out (but they don't know what they are talking about).

It is so simple. Yet, as you mention, some don't get it.

All they have to do is look down at their own feet. Are their toes out further than their heels \ / (toe out) or are the toes in further than their heels / \ (tow in).

Now just imagine the front of the motors as being the toes on your feet. Are they out or are the in.

Next lesson will be in belly buttons. Inies and outies.

does either toe in or toe out have an effect on water pick in order to cool the engine. Wouldn't there be a lose of pick up one way or the other. or to run strait and get the must flow to the engine' water pump pick up on the lower unit. Does Yamaha have a say in this?

Yamaha says nothing about water flow being affected. If it mattered, I suspect folks would be voicing concern about loss of water flow during turns. I don't hear or read of those concerns.

Grady White more than likely hung the original motors on your boat. Call them and see what they do. They are good folks up there.

To some folks a rake might seem complicated.

Reminds me of an old line in some comedy record I heard before you was borned. It was a momma hollering at her boy.

"Hey Rufus, get away from that wheel barrow. You know you don't knows nothing 'bout machinery".

                        ADJUSTING TWIN MOTORS
Set the engines in the toe-out position, and
measure the distances between the two
engines at the center point of the rear (a) and
front (b) of the lower casing. The difference
                        between measurement (a) and measurement
                        (b) should not exceed 25 mm (1 in.).

                        * Adjustment: (b) – (a) = Within 25 mm (1 in)

For best result, your toe-out distance should
be set so that the twin motors wake meets
                        approximately 7.5 – 15 m (25 – 50 ft) past the
                        stern of the boat.
If its got teats or tires, you bound to have trouble with it....

It depends on whether your motor is mounted on the Transom or Gill Bracket. I own 2 Grady White Sailfish. The one with the motors on the transom likes the props toed out 1 inch. The one with the motors out on the Gill Bracket likes them parallel with NO toe in or out. I have played with all 4 positions on both boats and this is what I ended up with as their happy place.
