  • Engine Flushing - F6

I just purchased a 2023 F6 outboard engine short shaft. The engine is on a sailboat that operates in salt water, and the manual on page 53 states to flush the engine. Great, I have done this on all my outboards in the past. The manual on page 58 lists one procedure to flush the engine and seems more focused on long-term storage. This procedure requires removing the propeller and putting the machine in a test tank. It's not practical every week. Even leaving the propeller on and placing a bucket under is difficult since the sailboat is on a lift. Yamaha does not sell or recommend an ear muff flushing kits for this engine. Does anyone know of an ear muff flushing kit that will work on it? I have read in past manuals that you can flush it through a wash port near the gear case oil port. The port is present with the words WASH, but nowhere in the current manual does it say anything about this port. Thanks.

I had a Mercury 20hp and Suzuki 15hp with a flush port on the gear case. Simply remove the plug and screw in a suitable fitting and connect hose to flush. Getting the fitting is the trouble.

I believe this is the part number you are looking for:
    ABB-FLUSH-JD

Google that and you will find it says it's for jet drive...but I believe it fit your gear case wash plug. Check with your dealer to be sure.

Shame on Yamaha (or their subcontractor) for leaving flushing information out of the manual.

Well, you could definitely use the wash port with the adapter as that's exactly what it's for. Just turn the hose on and let the water run.

If a regular set of muffs will make a seal on the lower unit around the intake, go for it. I'd give it a try - it's not like you're going to hurt anything in the amount of time it takes to try it. There will at least be some water going in to lubricate the impeller. After all, this isn't a complicated process - you just need water to go "in"

Leg is so small regular muffs won't fit..thus the wash port right next to the water pump.

You could be right. I've used muffs on other engines that are that size (and have the wash port) and it was just fine. But never on this particular engine.
