My bet is still on a wiring issue, but, I could be wrong.

1988 Yamaha 130hp Losing Spark/No Spark

Not sure how this forum works, but hoping you guys see this post even though it has been a while. It went from losing spark sometimes to completely losing spark. I hired a mechanic, and he recommend a new power pack, pulser coil and stator. He installed all of them and still didn't have spark on all four cylinders. We have voltage and we disconnected the kill circuit and we don't have anything passing through the power pack. He is thinking that it might be a bad power pack out of the box, but I'm not sold. He also mentioned play in the flywheel and thinks that the magnets may not be lining up properly. Any insight? $1,700 in the hole on this "repair" and missing a ton of good fishing.

peak voltages can be tested into and out of the CDI to see if they are good, did your mechanic do any of that before replacing parts that were good or bad?
did he test after he replaced them?
if so what were all the readings?
did he or you test the ignition switch since you said it was bad?Last edited by 99yam40; 07-20-2023, 10:10 PM.

Best guess is the CDI/power pack was OK in the first place, and replacing it fixed nothing (as you found out) throwing parts at it might get it fixed eventually (if you don’t run out of money first) the ignition system is simple enough to trouble shoot with a manual to tell you what to test. Still thinking you have a wiring issue, Yamaha electrics and flywheels are not often faulty.

So what is it?
it has no spark to all, or it has spark to 3 on of the 4?
which does not have spark?
and what are the peak voltage readings on the one without spark compared to the others
how did he go around the ignition switch?
unplugged the harness at the motor and plugged his box into that 7 pin connector or some other way?
when did it have no spark or just some spark? while still hooked to you controls and switch or when he bypassed those?
what tells this motor when to send spark to the coils?
My C40TLRX has 3 pulser coils that do that, one for each cylinder.
are those reading good?Last edited by 99yam40; 07-21-2023, 07:55 AM.

I have not seen the crankshaft play, but bad bearings could do that I guess.
If there is good inputs to the CDI and outputs of the CDI, my guess would be the coil or wiring/connections to that coil that does not spark.
Here is a link to an aftermarket troubleshooting guide.
Page 97 is where Yamaha starts
4 cylinder motor starts on page 98
read and get failure with the testing

Appreciate this, so in theory, if I were to disconnect the white wire(Kill circuit) in the power pack, then that would alleviate any potential wiring issues from the ignition. He said he did that, but I haven't tried it myself. From there I guess I'll follow the resistance and DVA output on page 99. This is above my paygrade, but I don't think my mechanic can fix it.
and hope he gives you the actual ones he removed from your motor
