  • No Spark Yamaha AETO140

Hi there, new to the forum and hopefully sorting out an issue with my outboard
First a bit of history and where i am up to
Last time I was out she decided to run on only three cylinders
I changed the plugs when I got home.....still only running on three
I did a compression check and 140 on all cylinders
As part of the whole service and diagnostics I had a carb kit, rebuilt the carbs, new water separator and fuel bulb, these were all items I was going to address prior to the misfiring issue.
So now moved onto the coils, carried out resistance readings on all four, the same at 0.6 ohms, HT leads three identical number 4 was a long way off the others, so assume a new coil
So now try to start (this is over a few weeks)
Nothing........No spark at all on any 4 cylinders
I checked kill switch circuit that checks out
Removed the white wire from CDI just to double check...Nothing
    Removed the blue jumper wire..Nothing
I have tested the stator windings both for resistance and voltage with a Fluke and DVA and all in spec
I have tested the Pulser coils again for resistance and voltage and again in spec
The only thing a have found as according to CDI Yamaha Troubleshooting guide is I believe testing the 4 trigger wires to ground whilst cranking i should have 2.5V minimum........I have nothing, albeit as I said testing between the pulser coil windings the readings are in spec
Am i on the right track ?
Am I looking at faulty CDI or Pulser coils or perhaps missing something obvious ?
Can someone throw some light on this
    Much appreciated
    Love the forum
    Cheers

I am not following your posting info
you say the pulser coils all test in spec and then you talk about trigger wires.
what are those trigger wires from and to?

The CDI manual asks for tests between White/Red and White/Yellow
      also White/Black and white/Green
These are the pulser coil pairs
These cables are from pulser coils to CDI
The readings I have for resistance abd voltage are all in spec as per CDI electronic guide
      The guide also asks for
      White/Black to engine ground
      White/Red to engine ground
      White/Yellow to engine Ground
      White/Green to engine ground
      Manual says 2.5v minimum
I am not getting that voltage, hence I wanted to know if I am on the right track with this or should I be looking elsewhere ?
      Cheers

I am guessing there are only 2 pulser coils in this motor, but do not see how you would get a reading to ground when measuring voltages on each of the 4 wires to ground.
I would not think they would be referenced to ground somewhere.

if there are 4 pulser coils,I would not think you would get readings between the 4 wires

What is the complete engine ID? Begins with the number 6.

            yes two pulsed coils
yes also confused why asking for Coil to earth voltage readings
            cheers

140AETO will be the model. The engine ID will be something like 6F3L ******

Have you any idea when the motor was made?

Where in the world are you located?

                  Hi there again
                  just testing and testing again
all coil packs on the primary side are 0.6 ohms
                  spec says 0.2-0.3
                  more resistance less current
should I be looking at changing these also !
I know one of them is bad already as has very hi resistance on the HT side
But could be plug cap !!

did you take into consideration the test lead resistance

and I agree check the cap to see if that is where the problem is

There is no Yamaha specification to test the pulser coils to ground. The primary requirement is for voltage output to the CDI box.

I believe that the input and output wires to and from your CDI box have ring terminals. Have you removed and cleaned all of the connection points?

                          Thanks for your input
so looks like all my tests are ok and within spec
Yes all connection points to CDI have been disconnected and cleaned
Are we looking at a possible CDI failure perhaps ?

good voltage into CDI and bad/none out to coils along with no ground from the key switch or man overboard switch to kill the voltage would make me think the CDI is bad

                              Yes
                              Definetly looking that way
i will do all relevant tests once more just to prove my readings
Thanks to all who have contributed it’s been a great help
                              I will keep forum updated
