idling problems

I have a 2018 or 2019 8hp four stroke, it has been setting for the last couple of years. I had run the gas out the last time it was used. I've added new gas and the motor starts just fine the problem is It will not idle When I try and shift into forward and bring the motor down to an idle so I can shift it dies. Not sure what to do, i thought I might try and put some carb cleaner and see if that will make any difference but not sure if that wll be good for the engine. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't waste your time with "carb cleaner" the carb needs to be fully dismantled and completely cleaned, it's not difficult with basic tools and moderate skill.
