Ignition Key Problem

One of my Yamaha 200 outboards (ETXF) cranks over just fine...
Will not turn off with key, only shuts down by removing lanyard from kill switch...
Both ignitions are identically wired...
Any suggestions?

Defective key switch is the most likely cause.

Get behind the switch panel and check continuity between the black wire and the white wire that lead from the key switch that is causing the problem. Should be continuity when the key is off and no continuity when the key is on.

New after market key switches..replaced last season
No white...
Red..
Black..
Purple..
Yellow/red...
Yellow/Black...
Balck/Yellow...

Then look for the wiring info for wire colors from the company that makes the switch.

New switches go bad some times

Were the after market switches just an economy purchase?....I know Yamaha parts are high$$, but maybe worth the difference on certain items, especially electrical items....

Yes, was given an 89 Grady Sailfish with twins last season...
Needed a bunch of work, 1 lower unit w/hardware, battery switches , trim tab pump, fiberglass a soft deck piece, refinished motors with new decals, hydraulic steering hoses, throttle cables, head etc. etc so I chose to go after market on some things.
Plan on returning boat to stock with some upgrades but I also like to use it from time to time.

Check the wiring. Both switches share common wiring. In the Yamaha world the white wire gets grounded by a black wire to stop the motor from running.

As stated in my initial post both ignitions are wired identically so I will test the switch as suggested...

on the after market junk, blk/yellow to black is the kill circuit.
where its spliced to the Yamaha wiring it will change to white and black. black being an engine ground.

Sorry...
It was a wiring issue...
Tested switch and problem was not in switch...
The ground wire from switch was not making good contact and was not visible through heat shrink tube...
Must have pulled it loose when I removed ignition harness, resecured and problem solved...
