225 HPDI gear shift problem

Replaced water pump on 07 225 HPDI. Shifter in neutral before removal and when installed. Everything slide back into place, shift tube and shift rod. It'll go into forward but not reverse, I can move prop shaft and it'll go into reverse but not forward. I drop unit several times but it still does the same as above. What do I have out of alignment?

drop the case again. set the case to N.
make sure the shift slide mark is lined up on the housing.
reinstall the case.

Thanks for the reply. Dropped unit case, in neutral (prop shaft turns freely) Best I can tell shift slide is in neutral. slid it back up, same results. can you explain how to tell if the shift slide is in neutral? Sorry for the ignorance on my part.

there should be a mark on the shift slide that will line up when in neutral
