Oil pumping??

2003 90 2 stroke

Having intermittent horn on restart.
Water pumping ok.
Was told to clean filter around float switch in oil tank. Did that today.
How can I verify that oil is still being delivered. .??
Somewhere i read to watch it flow thru the lines. My lines are not clear.
Want to be SURE all is good before I run it tomorrow.

no way to really tell if oil is flowing to the pump other than trusting the law of gravity.
if its that concerning mark the oil tank and run 50/1 fuel premix until consumption is verified.

Over temperature horn or low oil quantity oil horn? Do you have a Yamaha tachometer installed, and if so, what type? Some will tell you what the horn is all about.

Do you want to know why the horn is sounding or do you want to verify that oil is flowing to the oil pump? Two completely different issues.

If the pump failed to operate the horn would not sound although the motor would soon fail. There is no warning alarm for a defective pump.

On the other hand, the horn can sound a low oil alert yet the oil pump might still have sufficient oil to supply to the motor.

If the oil level decreases with usage of the motor that is a pretty good indication that the pump is doing its job. If the motor has not seized that is a pretty good indication that the pump is doing its job.

Pumps almost never fail. Warning systems can and do fail quite often.

The questions I am trying to answer are the two you mentioned.
Don't know why I am getting this alarm.
Going to run boat today with aux tank hooked up.
Took oil filter apart because a mechanic told me that could be the cause of horn going off.
Filter looked clean to me but cleaned it with gasoline just to be sure.

Run the motor on premix at a ratio of 50/1. Remove the oil pump link rod and position the oil control lever at the wot/full oiling position. Remove one oil line and route it to a clean container. With the engine running at 1500 RPM the pump should supply approximately 3.1 cm of oil in three minutes time. Repeat the test for oil lines numbers 2 and 3.

When the pump is verified to be working correctly, as it will be, come back here for advice as to how to find and fix your warning issue.

Ran the boat today long enough on aux tank to verify oil level did drop.
Switched back to inboard tank.
Motor ran fine at first then horn went off on restart. Went into limp mode.
If I restart again it seems to correct itself and runs full throttle again.
It even corrected itself once when I just kept running it.
I may need to add here it has been some years since I changed impeller.
Water seems pretty hot coming out of prop when I was flushing motor back in driveway.
Never have used "ring free" which I just read about in owners manual.
All that said I'm not sure what the hell is going on.

how many alarms do you have?
1 is for low oil level in the tank.
no flow alarms on a Yamaha.

2 is over temp.

thats about it.

Well, you need a water pump just for the time in use, wear and tear etc. I'd replace that first and rule that out.

There have been cases where parts of the impeller came apart and got jambed up in the block.


It sounds as if your water flow in relation to RPM's are related and once the engine is at a higher RPM, it gets enough water to cool the engine (and turn off the alarm)...

As soon as I wrote that last nite I realized that was the logical next step.
I will replace impeller and take her out again to see what happens.
Not going to be able to take my boat out today for the 10th anniversary of Katrina but we will meet a friend and go in his.
