tach signal test ?

i have just installed tach rigging kit for my 1994 yamaha 200 sws series and tach just reads "0" i've double checked dip switches and made sure green wire was connected to the tach. my next question is how do check the green wire for the signal, what kind of tester is needed ?(i have ohm meter and others)and should i test from the rectifier ? any help would be appreciated..

At 1500 rpm's you should get 13 volts(peak reading volt meter) across the 2 green wires coming out of stator but with a regular volt meter on AC scale the voltage reading will different.
